Calf Creep: Volga Ag
Center will be handling the Creep Past Gest again this year,
manufactured in the 1/8” pellet. Creep Past Gest contains
highly-digestible sources of fiber that are non-starchy. There
are no poor quality fillers in Creep Past Gest, such as corn
cobs or oat hulls. Today’s modern genetics demand that
a creep feed quality matches up to the genetic capability
of the calf. Creep is a great investment today with pasture
rents getting higher all the time. Feeding Creep Past Gest
this summer will ensure that your calves, their mothers, and
their pastures don’t all stall out this year when Mother
Nature turns her other cheek and we get a little dry!
Creep Feeding
Often times we get asked if creep feeding calves on pasture
really pays.
When calves are selling for $70.00/cwt plus, the answer is
yes. Calves put on more pounds and the cow doesn’t get
pulled down in condition. This in itself adds more dollars
back into the cattlemen’s pocket with improved conception
rates and heavier, more uniform calves at weaning.
At Volga Ag Center, we use a unique 2 Step Creep Program:
Step 1: Pasture Gest 14%. Pasture Gest is a digestible fiber
creep pellet that puts pounds on without the risk of calves
over eating. The same bacteria that breaks down the fiber
in grass and converts it to energy is the same bacteria that
breaks down the fiber in Pasture Gest. This gives you a very
efficient gain! Feed Step 1 to 1% of body weight.
Step 2: Purina Accu-Creep.
As everyone knows, when grass quantity and quality start to
decrease in August, creep intakes get high. This can get very
costly for cattlemen. Accu-Creep with Intake Modifying Technology
holds calf intake of creep at 1% of body weight. (Ex. 400
lb calf will eat 4 lbs). Accu- Creep is a high energy creep
feed. It fills the gap of late season low energy grasses more
efficiently than a pelleted creep. Feed Step 2 to weaning.
IM Technology is Purina’s Intake Modifier Program. It
modifies intakes, not reduces, we like to call it snack eating.
This keeps the calf very efficient.
Our producers have reduced costs and added pounds by going
to this program.
